Allergic rhinitis is very common nowadays and until recently mostly medical treatments eased the symptoms. The phototherapeutic procedure, Rhinolight is a radical new treatment is.

Allergic rhinitis is the most common allergic disease. About 10 to 20 per cent of the population suffers from it, and its occurrence has been growing recently, mainly in developed industrial countries. The 21st century is also called the century of allergy. Rhinitis is not a serious illness, but its unpleasant symptoms make everyday life more difficult. In 20 per cent of the cases asthma may occur. Most frequently the pollens of different trees, grasses, flowers and weeds are responsible for the so-called seasonal rhinitis, which can last from a few weeks up to months depending on the blooming of plants. The severity of symptoms depends on the number of pollen grains, but non-specific environmental factors (e.g. air pollution) also influence the severity of symptoms just as well as the patient's physical and mental state.

The research team of the Department of Dermatology and Allergology, University of Szeged developed the Rhinolight device to treat the nasal mucosa based on phototherapy. The research team has shown that the light therapy used during the Rhinolight treatment reduced the symptoms of patients suffering from allergic rhinitis.

The Rhinolight therapy is painless; it takes only a short time and causes no discomfort.

It is usually suggested to start the therapy when seasonal symptoms appear, or when they are the most intensive. The number of treatments is determined by the specialist during the first examination. Usually 4 to 8 treatments are necessary. Only one treatment may be performed one day. The first specialist examination lasts approximately 45 minutes. The further treatments take 10-15 minutes each at a previously arranged time.
