Thighplasty

Thighplasty is suitable for people who have saggy, flabby and/or dimpled loose tissue and skin on their thighs. People who lost a large amount of weight after bariatric surgery are also candidates for this procedure. The surgery improves the contours of the thigh by making the skin tighter.
The surgery
Thighplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia, but sometimes a twilight anaesthesia is used. There are different types of thigh lifts that differ in the incision pattern. Your surgeon decides which type is appropriate for you considering the following factors: the amount of excess fat and skin, skin quality, the areas to be treated, and personal preferences. The different types of thighplasties can be combined and performed in the same time. It can also be combined with other surgeries, e.g. tummy tuck.
The most popular type of thighplasty is the inner thigh lift. The surgeon makes short incisions in the groin fold, and then lifts up the skin and tissue to tighten it. It is suitable for people with a moderate amount of excess skin and fat.
Outer (or lateral) thigh lift tightens the skin on the front and outside of the thigh, and requires an incision that extends from the groin around the hip. The procedure is similar to the other types of thighplasty.
A vertical thighplasty is suitable for people with significant fat and loose skin. The surgeon makes and incision that starts at the groin crease and extends to the inner knee, then removes excess skin from the inner thigh.
The length of the surgery depends on the type of the procedure.
After surgery
Patients are required to wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and help the natural shrinking and tightening of the skin. Drainage tubes are inserted to reduce swelling and get rid of excess fluid.
Pain can be controlled with pain medication, but in case of larger thigh lifts a hospital stay is necessary.
Bruising and swelling usually subside within a month. You should avoid strenuous activities for 6 weeks. The time of the total recovery is about 4-6 months.
Complications and risks
Every surgery presents some complications and risks. The most common complications include: bruising, swelling, bleeding, blood clotting, infection, scarring and negative reaction to anaesthesia.
You can avoid most complications by choosing the right cosmetic surgeon and following pre- and postoperative instructions.
