Mentoplasty

Mentoplasty (chin surgery) is a term used to describe the restructuring and reformation of the chin. It can correct conditions like macrogenia (a quite prominent jaw region), or microgenia (quite deficient and receded chin). By sculpting the chin through mentoplasty plastic surgery, a more aesthetically pleasing profile and more attractive form can be achieved.
The surgery
Mentoplasty plastic surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision inside the mouth. The advantage of this approach is that there is no external wound. If a submental liposuction of a double chin is performed at the same time as the mentoplasty, the incision is made underneath the chin.
If necessary, the surgeon places an implant in front of the lower jaw, deep into the chin's soft tissue to achieve the desired contour. The implant is held in place with a suture or it is placed beneath the periosteum, which is the fibrous protective layer adherent to the jawbone.
The surgery takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
After the surgery
A chin dressing is applied after the surgery. It is usually kept in place for two or three days. The stitches are usually removed within five to seven days after mentoplasty.
Overall improvement can generally be expected after mentoplasty and improvement in contour can easily be seen at the time of surgery. Total recovery lasts about six to eight weeks after the procedure.
Complications and risks
Every surgery presents some complications and risks. The most common complications include: bruising, swelling, bleeding, blood clotting, infection, scarring and negative reaction to anaesthesia.
After the surgery swilling and bruising is likely to occur, but it usually disappear after a week. Some patients experience a stretched, tight sensation in the first week after the surgery.
You can avoid most complications by choosing the right cosmetic surgeon and following pre- and postoperative instructions.
